Install with one command

On a Linux machine with Docker, install highsea and start it with one command, and update it the same way.

Written for highsea 0.2.0-beta.3, and followed on Docker Engine 29.8 with Docker Compose 5.6.

On a Linux machine that already has Docker, one command installs highsea and starts it. It writes the same compose file as Install with Docker, so everything there applies afterwards.

Before you start

You need a 64-bit Linux machine with Docker Engine and its Compose plugin. The installer never installs Docker for you. If it's missing, follow Docker's own instructions first. On a Mac or Windows, use Install with Docker instead.

Install

curl -fsSL https://get.highsea.tv | sh

The installer:

  • checks that Docker and Compose are there and answering, and asks for your password through sudo when it needs to;
  • looks for graphics: Intel and AMD at /dev/dri, and NVIDIA through NVIDIA's container toolkit;
  • writes compose.yaml to /opt/highsea, with highsea's settings in /opt/highsea/config and your films in /opt/highsea/data;
  • makes the data folder yours, so highsea runs as you;
  • starts highsea, waits until it's ready and prints the address to open.

Open that address to run setup.

Choose the folders

Your films probably live somewhere else. Give the installer the folder that holds downloads and the library, on one disk, so imports hardlink instead of copying:

curl -fsSL https://get.highsea.tv | sh -s -- --data /srv/data
OptionWhat it does
--data FOLDERThe folder for downloads and the library, mounted as /data. Setup looks inside it for downloads and media/movies.
--dir FOLDERWhere compose.yaml and highsea's settings go, instead of /opt/highsea.
--version X.Y.ZA version to stay on, instead of the newest stable release.
--no-startWrites compose.yaml and stops there, so you can read or change it first.
--print-composePrints the compose file it would write, and does nothing else.

Check the installer first

To read the script before running it, and check it's the one highsea publishes:

curl -fsSLO https://get.highsea.tv/install.sh
curl -fsSL https://get.highsea.tv/install.sh.sha256 | sha256sum -c
sh install.sh

Update

Run the same command again. The installer keeps your compose.yaml as it is, with any changes you made, pulls the image it names and restarts highsea. System › Updates tells you when there's a new release.

When something stops it

The installer says what it found and stops without changing anything:

  • Docker isn't installed, or isn't answering: install or start it, then run the installer again.
  • A container called highsea already exists: it came from another folder. Run the installer with --dir and that folder to update it.
  • Something else is using port 3000: highsea's web page needs it. Stop the other program, or install with Docker and change the port.
  • An NVIDIA card without NVIDIA's container toolkit: highsea installs and uses the processor. Hardware acceleration says how to add the toolkit.
